How to choose books for examination?

The selection of right books while preparing for any exam is of utmost importance. It is one of the determining factor of how do you crack the exam? Your strategy for the exam preparation will be largely depending on this factor. Especially, in University level and in case of competitive examinations like IAS, you have to prepare notes on your own. A wrong selection of book can mar your career. Therefore, before you choose and start devoting your precious time and energy, at first do important research and choose right collection of books.

Consult teachers and students: This is one of the best options to locate or identify a right book. Consult your teachers and classmates about the best book that are available in the market related to your subject and syllabus. This time-tested technique could save you the last moment anxiety and tension.

Latest Books: Always go for latest edition books. Usually it has been seen that a student do not take care about the year of publication of the book. Whether the book is the latest edition, or it is the previous edition, least cares the student. But it affects the preparation for the examination as the old edition book might not contain the latest content.

Follow your intuition: Sometimes the book, which is highly referred by teachers as well as by your friends may not be useful to you. Just discard the book from your bookshelf. Go for a book that is up to your comprehension and easy for you to understand. Just follow your intuition.

Collaborated knowledge: Join in Orkut and discussion forums related to the exam or the course you are pursuing. If you are preparing for IGNOU, IIT, NIOS or CBSE examination, join in these forums and communities. It might be very helpful to come to a decision on choosing the right kind of book.

Top 4 Reasons: Why students switch to IGNOU?

Most of the Universities in India have distance education facility in various disciplines in addition to regular courses. However, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is the premier institution solely established for the same. It caters the educational need of different categories of students in a broader network and with vast courses. The courses of IGNOU are aimed at self-enrichment besides professional up gradation.

Often it has been observed that a student had to take a decision whether to pursue the course further from the same University or should opt for other mode of learning like distance education. For students, IGNOU seems to be the best option for distance education to continue their studies. There are many other reasons also behind the migration of students to the open university IGNOU:

Change of University

Unavailability of Courses: One of the foremost reasons that a student switches University goes with the availability of the course. IGNOU offers a wide gamut of courses which are generally not available in other universities. For the reason, getting admission to IGNOU becomes the natural answer.

Place Adaptability: Yes, it is another important parameter for any student to choose a course from a University. Most of the Universities that provide distance learning don’t have a wide network of regional centers and study centers. Due to this, a student who has completed regular studies in Assam or in other parts of India, can’t pursue the same course in any other part of India. For examination and for any other course-related purpose the student has to revisit the University. IGNOU has a strong network of study centers and regional centers across the country.

Course material: Numerous Universities run the old distance learning courses for decades. The course materials are not updated and they are not tuned to the latest requirements in the market or to the latest trend. To this fact, the IGNOU course materials are up-to-date and are of high quality.

Student Counseling Student: One would not like to pursue a course where he or she is a lone soul. They would prefer rather to go with the University that has a sizable population doing the same course. And IGNOU has got this advantage. The distance learning University has a big student population from all over the world pursuing courses it offers. One will find student counseling not only offline but in online as well. The vibrant IGNOU community in the social networking sites like Orkut is an evident example on how students assist other students.

Misconception about Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) courses

It is generally looked upon that correspondence courses provided by Open Universities do not get equal value as regular courses. There is always a question of low estimation looms over students pursuing Correspondence Courses from Open Universities despite the fact that these correspondence courses are equally extensive and qualitative in their scope and grade.

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is one of the premier Open Universities in India, which provides the facility of distance learning to those students who cannot pursue regular courses and hence opt for correspondence courses.

Established in 1985, IGNOU is a UGC-recognized university that offers courses in diverse areas and at different levels of undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programme. It caters the students across the country and abroad through its regional centres, recognized regional centres, study centres and Partner Institutions outside India.

The regional centres of IGNOU are located in these places:

AGARTALA, AHMEDABAD, AIZAWL, ALIGARH, BANGALORE, BHOPAL, BHAGALPUR, BHUBANESHWAR, CHENNAI, CHANDIGARH, COCHIN, DARBHANGA, DEHRADUN, DELHI, GANGTOK, GUWAHATI, HYDERABAD, IMPHAL, ITANAGAR, JABALPUR, JAIPUR, JAMMU, JOHART, KARNAL, KHANNA, KOHIMA, KOLKATA, KORAPUT, LUCKNOW, MADURAI, MUMBAI, NOIDA, NAGPUR, PANAJI, PATNA, PORT BLAIR, PUNE, RAIPUR, RAJKOT, RANCHI, RAGHUNATHGAN, SHIMLA, SHILLONG, SILIGURI, SRINAGAR,TRIVANDRUM, VARANASI, VIJAYAWADA.

The setting up of regional centres across the length and breadth of the country has not only facilitated students to communicate and redress their problems during the course schedule but has come as a one-stop destination for thousands of students who wants to pursue their education through it.

IGNOU books and course materials, which were not available in market earlier, is now available everywhere. Those who still find difficulty in availing IGNOU books can now buy online. [Books on Demand can avail you the IGNOU books if you are not finding it in your locality or nearby bookstores.]

In a country like India, where higher education is still a dream for many, IGNOU has made higher education a reality. It is disseminating education and knowledge with flexibility to students as well as professional at the same time.

Unfortunately, the distance-learning model of education is not being appreciated on practical ground. There are instances when companies don’t even entertain candidates with distance education degrees on their CVs. They are critical about the capabilities of the candidates. This prejudice is more visible in the case of technical jobs.

Nevertheless, there are innumerable instances where the students of IGNOU or other open universities have even cracked the toughest of all the competitive exams, which brings fever to any regular candidates also.

In 2008, two IGNOU students, name Ravikant Singh and Keshavendra Kumar, both from Bihar, not only achieved their goal but also proved with their position (Keshavendra bagged rank 45 and Ravikant 77) that open universities students are equally talented and capable as students from regular courses.

After all no university gives guarantee of job or life!
